INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO MATHUR AQUEDUCT, TAMIL NADU – A LEGACY IN CIVIL ENGINEERING
Our department had the opportunity to explore one of Asia’s tallest and oldest aqueducts — the Mathur Hanging Trough Aqueduct on 14.07.2025, located in the scenic Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu. Constructed in 1966, this iconic structure continues to serve its original purpose while standing as a testament to brilliant civil engineering.
Built: 1966
Height: Approx. 35 meters (115 feet)
Length: 1,250 feet (~0.38 km)
Structure: RCC trough supported by 28 piers
Purpose: Transports irrigation water across the Pahrali River valley
Unique Feature: Pedestrian walkway alongside the water channel
· Understand the structural design and material use in large-span aqueducts
· Learn about gravity-based water conveyance without modern machinery
· Observe a legacy irrigation system still in operation
· Examine how heritage infrastructure can serve dual roles (utility + tourism)
